Reading Goals 2015 | Making Up for Monday 12/29 | M&M Mariam

M&M mariam reading goals 2015

The holidays are over, but the New Year is fast approaching!! Everyone on BookTube (Bookish YouTube) is posting their Goals for 2015.

I just came back from vacation, I will post a Daily Diaries this coming Friday for my currently lacking #DailyDiaries post with pictures and a video of the light show I saw up at The University of Life in Atlanta, Georgia.

This year I made a goal back in July to read 72 books – I figured 1 book a week for the year, and a few extra to challenge myself since some books I read will be short and I’ll finish in 3 days or less. My GoodReads said I read 12, but this is minus the books I read for work, and the children’s books I reviewed. If I add those it brings my read-books up to 34. Less than half my goal!! But if you look at my book haul videos I brought home over a hundred books!! Mainly because authors I choose are writing longer books up to 300+ pages, I read 50 and sometimes get bored with it. This year I’ve made a goal of reading books with 240 pages or less. I feel like a good story can be told in less than 250 pages. If I choose a book with over 250 pages, I will read 240 and consider it read. I explain in my video.

And now to 2015…

I’ve been a champion of my own personal, as in not work-related, reading life the better half of this year, and I decided to be more proactive for next year’s reading goals by making a public post to share my goals with you and hopefully you all can hold me accountable to making it happen!!

I decided to break my goals up into 4 categories:

For WORK reading, as I am an English teacher and business owner, my goals are:

  1. Finish reading #GirlBoss by Sophia Amorusso (CEO of NastyGal fashion)
  2. Read more English & American Literature
  3. Read a teaching book

For FICTION reading my goals are:

Read more adult fiction written in the past 2 years (2013 & 2014)

windmill of the godsa thousand splendid suns

I’ve read books from the 1980s, The Windmills of the Gods by Sidney Sheldon (creator of the popular 60s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie),the James Bond novels by Ian Flemming, and 00s, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, as well as A Gentleman’s Game by Greg Rucka, but am lacking in contemporary novels, which are up to date as far as technology goes (Smart phones, and global issues like melting ice caps and economic recessions, and contemporary pop culture like reality shows)

For NONFICTION reading my goals are:

Read Anything new!! Try to read more history!

For ARTISTIC WORK reading my goals are:

game of thrones gra[hoc novel vol 2

I recently read a Game of Thrones graphic novel adaptation, however, I feel like the best comics are the classics like Superman and Batman — still today’s graphic novels cover all genres – fantasy, realistic fiction, and history. It’s exciting to delve into the world of graphic novels today!

Now onto my overall goals, as far as books go:

Read 99 books.

This year’s goal is 99 books. Just because it’s more than 2014, it will challenge me and it’s easy to remember…also it’s not 100.  That would be too much.  😀

Read and understand a book in a language that isn’t my primary language.

My primary language is English so my goal is to read a book in a second language. I understand Urdu but can’t read it well enough to read a book in it, I studied Spanish and Latin — but I don’t know it well enough to read books in it. I’m also an elementary Arabic student. So, to read a book in Arabic will be my goal! Granted, I’m not an advanced Arabic student, so the books I read will be elementary level books. For example, this year, I read Goldilocks and the Three Bears in Arabic.

Also, I have decided to join Bout of Books 12 and will be participating January 5th-11th, as well as the Trees of Reverie 28-hour read–a-thon starting 8PM December 31st and ending 11:59Pm on January 1st, 2015 to kick-start my reading life for 2015!! I will be posting updates via my Twitter and Instagram for both. Sign-ups are above — just click on the pictures above if you’d like to join us hundreds of awesome readers!!

Introduce Each Book in my Videos

I have a tendency to start talking about my thoughts and feelings on the book instead of what it’s mainly about, so I want to make a goal to introduce the book better in my videos. We all could us some improvement! This is where I need it!!

Weekly Updates

I forgot to mention this in my video, so I will mention it here.  Since my goal is to read books 240 pages or less, I will be reading more books and will be able to put up video updates every week. I also don’t like long videos, so I have to ask myself, if I don’t like watching long videos, why would anyone want to see my long videos? So I’m going to pack my videos in with chock full of good stuff and shorten them to 3-4 minutes each. I will continue to do tags, reviews, and add games to the videos I film!

I haven’t been too great at consistently doing memes! In 2015, this is what I planned as a tentative schedule:

  1.  Making Up for Monday by Tiffany
  2. Top 5 Wednesday by Ginger Reads Lainey
  3. Top 3 Thursday The Feels by Yours Truly
  4. #Fridayreads – 15s video on my Instagram

And that’s it for my reading goals for 2015! It will be a packed year.  I want to wish you all a happy new year! Also, leave me your reading goals for 2015 in the comments so we can talk books and share reading goals! Meanwhile, I’ll catch ya all later.
